Job history

Prior to going freelance in 2019, I had a number of in-house roles.

Editorial assistant (April 2018 – October 2019)
I worked for 18 months as an editorial assistant for TV chef Jamie Oliver. Working closely with the editor-in-chief, I was instrumental in the publication 2019’s Veg, 2018’s Friday Night Feast Cookbook, and the republication of Jamie’s first five books as Penguin Modern Cookery Classics. I also edited and proofread numerous recipes for the website, and I proofread and approved all content that was syndicated for publication in magazines.

Editorial intern (February 2018 – April 2018)
A two-month editorial internship working for a restaurant guidebook and website. Aspects of my role included inputting information into a content management system and proofreading text to be published on the website and guidebook to ensure that a high quality was maintained.

Editorial intern (January 2018)
A one-month editorial internship for a publisher of political non-fiction books. Responsibilities included preparing manuscripts for editing, carrying out pre-print checks, writing cover copy and communicating with a variety of authors and literary agents.

My qualifications

Master’s degree in the Culture of the European Renaissance, University of Warwick (2016 – 2017)
A master of arts degree focusing on the literature, art and history of the European Renaissance. For part of the degree, I wrote a 16,000-word dissertation on a poem by the Elizabethan poet Thomas Nashe.

Bachelor’s degree in Classics, University of Warwick (2013 – 2016)
A first-class bachelor of arts degree in Classics (Latin and Ancient Greek literature, and ancient history). As coursework, I wrote a 10,000-word dissertation on the representation of Ariadne in the poetry of Ovid.

Proofreading Academy’s ‘Becoming a Proofreader’ course (2019)
To gain further editorial practice, I took and passed the ‘Becoming a Proofreader’ course run by the Proofreading Academy. The course specialises in academic proofreading (theses, journal articles, dissertations and essays) but also includes creative writing and business writing modules.
